In Colombia, we often use the expression “pisarnos las mangueras” (stepping on each other's hoses), which refers to crossing paths or stepping on each other's toes. I am using this popular saying today to refer to the game that Social Selling and Digital Marketing are playing with each other.

Many clients have told us that they agree with Social Selling, that they actually do it, and that they already have an agency that manages their communication on social media and does their Digital Marketing.

It is precisely this situation that has motivated me to write this article and clarify some concepts.

If social media is part of digital marketing, many people believe that by getting involved and generally just paying for ads on social media, they are already doing digital marketing, but this is not 100% true.

I will start by describing what social selling is NOT. It is not a faithful translation of the English term “social selling”; not at all. It is not an online sales system; we are not going to see a shopping cart here.

Social selling is using social media to interact, generate visibility, positioning, reputation, obtain business opportunities, and ultimately get customers.

And how is it done? That would be the question that arises. It is not complicated. It is about reaching the minds of customers indirectly, making them choose us. In other words, we do not sell; they buy from us, and we ultimately manage to sell more in a different way. Implement communication and content marketing strategies that bring us closer to potential customers by generating quality and relevant content that permanently arouses interest.

In this way, we can conclude that social media is the new way to connect with other people. This is why Social Selling and Digital Marketing complement each other and should not step on each other's toes. They are here to stay and change the way we find new customers and achieve our business goals in a different way.
